It’s obvious by the name of my company that my mother’s name was Francisca. She was an amazing woman. She was loving, nurturing, loyal and hardworking. She was and is my inspiration. If I am one third the woman that she was, then I have succeeded. I had always said that if I had a daughter that I would name her after my mom but as life would have it, I was never blessed with children. So in her memory, I named my business after her; a name that I am very proud of.
I was born in Havana, Cuba and grew up in New Jersey where my parent’s emigrated to in 1971, fleeing a repressive communist regime in order for me to have a better life. I had an amazingly blessed childhood because of my parent’s sacrifices and loving ways. No matter what obstacles they faced, laughter ruled our household. They had to leave my 19 year old brother behind in Cuba. My mother was a strong woman, often crying herself to sleep because of this, but I never knew. My mom was a stay at home mom and “Pipo” sometimes had up to three jobs to support us. “Mima” did everything on the home front, from painting walls, reupholstering furniture to running my father’s business; “Mercy Products”
Interesting fact: I have had no formal training in painting. In fact, I started painting five years ago this summer. My boyfriend at the time (my husband now) had just broken up with me. I was on a lunch break and found a Michaels store. I went in, bought five canvases and an acrylic paint set and so it began. I often think that I am channeling a dead artist when I paint. I don’t know what I will be painting; just the colors.....so welcome to my world.....
